2. Data processed for the provision of the website and the creation of log files

a. Which data is processed for what purpose?

Each time you access content on the website, data is temporarily stored that may allow you to be identified.

Technical request data may include:

• Date and time of access

• IP address

• Website from which the website was accessed

• Visited page on our website

• Notification of whether the retrieval was successful

• Amount of data transferred

• Information about the browser type and version used

• Operating system

Temporary storage of the data is necessary for the course of a website visit to enable delivery of the website. Further storage in log files takes place to ensure the functionality of the website and the security of the information technology systems. These purposes also constitute our legitimate interest in data processing.

b. What is the legal basis for processing this data?

The data is processed on the basis of Art. 6 Para. 1 (f) GDPR.

c. Are there other recipients of the personal data in addition to the controller?

The website is hosted by STRATO GmbH, Otto-Ostrowski-Straße 7, 10249 Berlin, Germany. STRATO provides the hosting infrastructure and processes technical visitor data on behalf of the website operator. According to STRATO, its hosting data centres are located in Germany. Information on its processing terms is available in the data processing agreement.

d. How long will the data be stored?

According to STRATO's hosting privacy information, visitor IP addresses are stored for a maximum of seven days to detect and prevent attacks.

STRATO separately provides downloadable webserver logs for the preceding six weeks, with client IP addresses or hostnames anonymised, and graphical statistics for longer periods. Error logs display errors from the preceding 24 hours. These availability periods describe the customer-facing reports and are not a separate guarantee about deletion of every internal backup. Details are provided in STRATO's log and statistics documentation.

3. Contact by email or telephone

If you contact me, I process the contact details and information you provide to respond to your enquiry. The legal basis is Article 6(1)(f) GDPR, based on the legitimate interest in responding to correspondence, or Article 6(1)(b) GDPR where the enquiry concerns a contract or steps requested before entering into one. Correspondence is retained while needed to handle the enquiry and any follow-up, and longer where statutory retention duties or the establishment, exercise or defence of legal claims require it.

4. Website functionality and external links

The website's own code does not use analytics or advertising scripts, cookies, local storage or session storage. Images, stylesheets and JavaScript libraries are served from this website's hosting. Search, publication filters and the CV timeline operate in your browser. Technical server logs are processed separately as described above.

External destinations, including Google Maps route planning, publication pages and researcher profiles, are linked rather than embedded. Following a link opens the respective service, which processes data under its own privacy policy.

5. Optional OpenStreetMap map

The map on Contact & Directions uses map images supplied by the OpenStreetMap Foundation. It remains inactive until you select “Load OpenStreetMap”. Loading the map transmits your IP address and technical request information, including the requested map tiles, browser information and potentially the referring website, to OpenStreetMap's servers. Map tiles are delivered through a worldwide network of cache servers.

The optional connection is based on your consent under Article 6(1)(a) GDPR. You can use this website without activating the map. To stop further map requests and withdraw consent for this page, reload the page and leave the map inactive. This does not affect processing already performed before withdrawal. Your choice is not stored for future page loads.

Information about the provider's processing, retention and international infrastructure is available in the OpenStreetMap Foundation Privacy Policy. The local KMSR field visualisation is served from this website and does not load OpenStreetMap tiles.

6. Rights of data subjects

a. Right to information

You can request information in accordance with Art. 15 GDPR about your personal data that we process.

b. Right to object

You have the right to object for specific reasons (see section II below).

c. Right to rectification

If the information concerning you is not (or no longer) correct, you can request a correction in accordance with Art. 16 GDPR. If your data is incomplete, you can request that it be completed.

d. Right to deletion

You can request the erasure of your personal data in accordance with Art. 17 GDPR.

e. Right to restriction of processing

In accordance with Art. 18 GDPR, you have the right to request that the processing of your personal data be restricted.

f. Right to lodge a complaint

If you believe that the processing of your personal data violates data protection law, you have the right to lodge a complaint with a data protection supervisory authority of your choice in accordance with Art. 77 (1) GDPR.

g. Right to data portability

In the event that the requirements of Art. 20 para. 1 GDPR are met, you have the right to have data that we process automatically on the basis of your consent or in fulfillment of a contract handed over to you or to third parties. The collection of data for the provision of the website and the storage of log files are absolutely necessary for the operation of the website. They are therefore not based on consent pursuant to Art. 6 (1) (a) GDPR or on a contract pursuant to Art. 6 (1) (b) GDPR, but are justified pursuant to Art. 6 (1) (f) GDPR. The requirements of Art. 20 (1) GDPR are therefore not met in this respect.
